Reproduction in Dogs
Breeding, Pregnancy, Birth: pshysiological conditions and clinical problems. Neonatal care
The purpose of this book is to be a little guideline for everyone who wants to increase their knowledge on topics like sexuality and pregnancy in his own dog, including sterilization, with related medical evidence.
It helps both whoever is entering the world of breeding and who needs to be prepared for his own dog’s birth.
What we’re going to talk about is reproduction: mating, gestation, nursing and neonatal care, illustrating the critical issues of this physiological process. Rather than creating apprehension, feelings of guilt or distrust, we want the readers to become aware of the difficulties that may occur even when a happy event is taking place.
There are different opinions for several reasons. The path to progress is not always easy and is only possible thanks to scientific research and experience.
The considerations in this book derives also – but not exclusively – from the point of view of a kennel with many years’ experience.
An interested reader will find not only a literary text that can be studied, but also feedback and advice based on direct experience in practical situations concerning veterinary medicine, employed in a small dog breed kennel with regard to the current researches.
The aim of some of these observations is to give pause for reflection, and avoiding situations that can get out of hand or be underestimated.
